Blindness and Delusion

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Paul writes, “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in” (Romans 11:25).  Further, Paul writes, “and then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12).  Examining these correlated realities, we see in one the redemption of  believing Gentiles at the expense of unbelieving Jews, and in the other the delusion of both accountable Jews and Gentiles who pass into the Tribulation.

Regarding Romans 11:25, several years ago a new believer asked me why the Jews cannot or will not believe the truth of the gospel –that their Jewish Messiah has come and will come again.  This new believer was on fire for the Lord, with no understanding of the why of (or tolerance for) Jewish failure to see what to her was so obvious.  Spiritual blindness did not register as valid explanation for Jewish unbelief.  Her heart tended to be hard toward Jews even though their blindness afforded her ability to be yoked to the commonwealth of Israel.  I pray she eventually embraced the truth of Genesis 12:3 “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

But the entire picture paints an “expiration date” of Jewish blindness for the benefit of Gentiles.  This expiration is fast approaching prior to the translation of the body of Christ –Christ’s betrothed Bride comprised of both saved Jews and Gentiles.  After Christ’s body is removed, lost Gentiles will pass into the Tribulation right along with lost Israel.  In this fact is a distinction that marks the difference between eternal separation from God for some Gentiles and possible eternal life for some Jews.  Scale-eyed Jews, surviving the Tribulation, heeding the call by 144 thousand sealed servants to sing “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord” will inherit the earthly promise of the Land Covenant, long held “in escrow” for the Jewish elect.  Scales that blind Jewish ability to see their Messiah will have served their purpose –allowing the times of the Gentiles to continue to their appointed end.

But after the translation of the Jewish and Gentile Body of Christ, the accountable Jews and Gentiles, previously hearing but failing to receive the good news of the gospel will no longer have opportunity to embrace He who is truth –the One they previously rejected.  Truth is Jesus of Nazareth.  Not only scales, but also delusion prevent blind ones from receiving the Lion of Judah, the Redeemer of Israel.    Lady Lydia.
